Why It Matters

Hearing Loss From Noise Is Permanent

Unlike some medical conditions, noise-induced hearing loss cannot be reversed. Once the delicate hair cells in your inner ear are damaged by excessive sound, they do not grow back — making prevention the only real cure.

Whether you're a musician, a construction worker, a shooter, or a swimmer, there is a hearing protection solution designed specifically for your needs. Off-the-shelf options provide some protection, but custom-fitted earplugs from an audiologist offer superior fit, comfort, and performance.

At Canberra Audiology, our audiologists assess your specific situation and recommend the most suitable protection — so you can enjoy your work, sport, or hobby without putting your hearing at risk.

Did you know? Exposure to sounds above 85dB for extended periods can permanently damage your hearing. A rock concert can reach 110dB — that's enough to cause damage in under 2 minutes without protection.

Understanding Noise Exposure

How Loud Is Too Loud?

Sound is measured in decibels (dB). The louder the sound and the longer the exposure, the greater the risk to your hearing.

60dB
Normal conversation
Safe — no risk with normal exposure
85dB
Heavy traffic / busy restaurant
Safe limit — risk increases beyond 8 hours
95dB
Lawnmower / motorbike
Damage possible after ~1 hour
105dB
Construction site / power tools
Damage possible after ~5 minutes
110dB+
Rock concert / shooting / jet engine
Damage possible in under 2 minutes — protection essential
Who Should Wear Hearing Protection?

Protection for Every Lifestyle

Hearing protection isn't just for industrial workers — anyone regularly exposed to loud environments can benefit.

Musicians

Regular exposure to rehearsals and performances can cause permanent damage. Custom musician plugs preserve sound quality while reducing volume.

Workers

Construction, manufacturing, mining and other industries expose workers to dangerously high noise levels. We offer custom industrial earplugs and earmuffs.

Shooters

Gunfire can reach 140–165dB — far exceeding safe limits. Specialist shooter's earplugs allow normal conversation while blocking harmful impulse noise.

Swimmers

Custom swim plugs keep water out of the ear canal — ideal for children with grommets, adults prone to swimmer's ear, or anyone with a perforated eardrum.

Our Solutions

Types of Hearing Protection We Offer

We offer both custom and non-custom options across all categories — your audiologist will help you find the right fit.

For Musicians

Protect your hearing without compromising sound quality

Excessive noise through music can cause permanent hearing loss depending on volume and duration. Our musician earplugs reduce volume without distorting sound integrity — so you can still hear every note clearly.

Non-Custom

Provides 15–20dB attenuation. Suitable for average ear canals. A cost-effective starting point for many musicians.

Custom Recommended

Moulded to your exact ear shape. Choose from 9–10dB, 15dB or 25dB attenuation. Attenuators are interchangeable, saving you money on multiple sets.

For Workers & Shooters

Industrial-grade protection for high-noise environments

Construction, mining, aviation, military, and workshops can permanently damage hearing without the right protection. We advise on the best solutions for you or your team and provide custom-made industrial earplugs.

We also conduct pre-employment hearing screenings and full diagnostic assessments, with comprehensive reports provided to you and/or your employer — helping businesses meet workplace health and safety obligations.

Earmuffs

Over-ear protection suitable for most industrial environments. Available in standard and electronic (sound-amplifying) versions.

Custom Plugs Recommended

Moulded to your ear for all-day comfort. Ideal for shooters requiring impulse-noise protection while maintaining situational awareness.

For Swimmers

Keep water out and prevent ear infections

Water contact with the ear can cause surfer's ear, swimmer's ear, and infections. Ear specialists recommend that children with grommets and anyone with a perforated eardrum keep their ears dry during water activities.

Rather than avoiding the water, our audiologist can recommend custom or non-custom swim plugs in a range of colours — with optional safety cords so they're never lost during play or sport.

Non-Custom

Available from newborn to adult sizes. Fun colours available. A great off-the-shelf solution for most swimmers.

Custom Plugs Recommended

Moulded to your ear for a watertight seal. Can be made in any size and any colour, with a safety cord option.
