About Our Service

A Safer Alternative to Syringing

Traditional ear syringing forces water into the ear canal under pressure, which can put strain on the delicate structures of the ear — including the eardrum. This can cause bleeding, pain, dizziness, and in some cases, permanent damage.

At Canberra Audiology, our audiologists use a specially designed microscope to gently scoop (ear curette) or micro-suction wax from the ear canal. This approach gives the audiologist a clear, magnified view of the ear at all times — allowing precise removal without any contact with or pressure on the eardrum.

This service is a timely and cost-effective alternative to visiting an ENT specialist. Most appointments take around 30 minutes, and most patients leave with their hearing immediately improved.

Please note: 95% of our patients have all of their ear wax successfully removed without the use of wax softening ear drops. In cases of extremely hard or impacted wax, we may suggest a short course of ear drops prior to your appointment to assist with safe removal.

Do You Need Wax Removal?

Signs You May Have a Wax Blockage

Ear wax is natural and usually harmless — but a build-up can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms. If you're experiencing any of the following, it may be time to book an appointment.

Reduced Hearing

A sudden or gradual reduction in hearing in one or both ears — often described as sounds being muffled or distant.

Ear Fullness

A feeling of pressure or fullness in the ear, similar to the sensation of being underwater or at altitude.

Tinnitus

Ringing, buzzing, or humming sounds in the ear that aren't caused by an external source — often worsened by wax blockage.

Ear Pain or Discomfort

Aching or itching inside the ear canal — particularly common when impacted wax presses against the eardrum.

Hearing Aid Problems

Wax build-up is one of the most common causes of hearing aid feedback and poor performance — regular cleaning is essential.

Dizziness or Vertigo

In some cases, significant wax build-up can affect balance, causing mild dizziness or a spinning sensation.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your appointment.

Do I need a GP referral?
No — you can book directly with us online or by phone. No referral is required for ear wax removal.
Do I need to use ear drops before my appointment?
In 95% of cases, no preparation is needed. However, if your wax is very hard or impacted, we may recommend using softening drops for a few days beforehand. We'll let you know when you book.
Is micro-suction painful?
The procedure is generally well tolerated and most patients find it comfortable. You may hear a louder noise from the suction device, but there should be no pain. Some people with very sensitive ears may feel mild discomfort.
How long does the appointment take?
Most appointments take around 20–30 minutes. In cases of significant or impacted wax, it may take a little longer.
Is it safe if I have grommets or a perforated eardrum?
Yes — unlike syringing, micro-suction is safe to use with grommets and perforated eardrums. Please let us know when booking so we can plan your appointment appropriately.
How often should I have my ears cleaned?
This varies from person to person. Some people naturally produce more wax than others. Your audiologist will advise you based on your individual situation — many people only need it done once every 12–24 months.
Can I use cotton buds to clean my ears?
We strongly advise against it. Cotton buds push wax deeper into the canal, increasing the risk of impaction and damage to the eardrum. The ear canal is self-cleaning — in most cases, it requires no intervention.

Blocked Ears? We Can Help.

Don't suffer with muffled hearing, ear fullness, or discomfort. Our audiologists can usually see you within a few days — and most patients leave with significantly improved hearing after just one appointment.
