About Cochlear Implants

What Is a Cochlear Implant?

Cochlear implants represent a significant technological advancement designed to assist individuals with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss — particularly where traditional hearing aids are no longer effective.

Unlike hearing aids, which amplify sound, cochlear implants work differently. They bypass the damaged portions of the inner ear (cochlea) and directly stimulate the auditory nerve with electrical signals, providing a sense of sound to the user.

A cochlear implant system has two main parts: an internal component surgically implanted under the skin behind the ear, and an external sound processor worn behind the ear. The processor picks up sound, converts it into digital signals, and sends them to the internal implant.

At Canberra Audiology, we offer comprehensive services for individuals considering cochlear implants as well as those who already have one. Our dedicated team supports you through every step of your cochlear implant journey.

The Internal Component

A small receiver and electrode array are surgically implanted by a specialist ENT surgeon. The electrode array is inserted into the cochlea and stimulates the auditory nerve directly — bypassing damaged hair cells.

The External Processor

Worn behind the ear, the sound processor captures and processes incoming sound, converting it into signals sent wirelessly to the internal implant. Modern processors are small, discreet, and rechargeable.

Am I a Candidate?

Who May Benefit from a Cochlear Implant?

Cochlear implants are not suitable for everyone — candidacy depends on the type and degree of hearing loss, as well as other medical and lifestyle factors. Our audiologists conduct thorough assessments to determine if a cochlear implant is right for you.

Adults with Severe–Profound Hearing Loss

Adults who receive little or no benefit from hearing aids — particularly those with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss — may be suitable candidates for cochlear implantation.

Children with Significant Hearing Loss

Cochlear implants can be life-changing for children with significant hearing loss. Early implantation gives children the best possible foundation for speech and language development.

Those Who Have Tried Hearing Aids

Typically, candidates have already used hearing aids without achieving adequate benefit. If you are finding that even the most powerful hearing aids are not giving you enough clarity, cochlear implants may be the next step.

Those with Sudden or Progressive Loss

Individuals who have experienced sudden sensorineural hearing loss, or whose hearing has progressively worsened to a severe or profound degree, may also meet candidacy criteria.

Not sure if you're a candidate? The best way to find out is to book a cochlear implant candidacy assessment with one of our audiologists. We'll conduct a thorough evaluation and give you clear, honest advice about your options.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often about cochlear implants.

How is a cochlear implant different from a hearing aid?
Hearing aids amplify sound so that damaged hair cells in the cochlea can still detect it. Cochlear implants bypass the damaged hair cells entirely and directly stimulate the auditory nerve with electrical signals. This makes them suitable for people with severe to profound hearing loss where amplification alone is no longer sufficient.
Does a cochlear implant restore normal hearing?
A cochlear implant does not restore normal hearing. It provides a different representation of sound that the brain learns to interpret over time. Most recipients experience significant improvements in their ability to understand speech — particularly with auditory rehabilitation. Outcomes vary between individuals.
Is cochlear implant surgery safe?
Cochlear implant surgery is generally considered safe and is performed by specialist ENT surgeons. As with any surgery, there are risks — which your surgeon and our audiologists will explain in detail during your pre-implantation consultations.
How long does the assessment process take?
The candidacy assessment process typically involves several appointments over a number of weeks, including audiological testing, medical review, and counselling. Our team will guide you through each step and keep you informed of timeframes.
Can children get cochlear implants?
Yes — cochlear implants can be implanted in children, including very young children. Early implantation in children with significant hearing loss can have profound benefits for speech and language development. Our audiologists can advise on candidacy and the process for paediatric implantation.
I already have a cochlear implant — can you help me?
Absolutely. We provide ongoing support for existing cochlear implant users including mapping, maintenance, rehabilitation, and access to the latest processor upgrades and accessories. Contact us to discuss your needs.
